Bobby Gonzalez is a respected basketball mind whose coaching career spans over 30 years across the college, pro, and international ranks. With a sharp basketball IQ, elite recruiting instincts, and a relentless competitive edge, Gonzalez has impacted athletes and programs around the world.
As a Division I head coach, Gonzalez posted a career record of 195–136, leading Manhattan College and Seton Hall University. At Manhattan, he inherited a 5–23 program and built it into a mid-major powerhouse winning 129 games, capturing eight conference titles, and reaching multiple NCAA Tournaments. His teams were known for their toughness, tempo, and swagger, earning 12 victories over AP Top-25 opponents and earning him 13 Coach of the Year awards.
At Seton Hall, Gonzalez continued his rise, securing four straight Top-20 recruiting classes and guiding the Pirates to postseason appearances in one of the nation’s toughest conferences. A proven talent developer, he has coached 12 players who went on to the NBA.
Currently a scout for the Detroit Pistons, Gonzalez brings his evaluation skills and global perspective to the professional level. He’s also contributed to NBA Summer League staffs, working with coaching legends like Mike Woodson (New York Knicks) and Larry Brown (Charlotte Hornets).
Internationally, Gonzalez has coached in China, Lithuania, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, including as associate head coach for the Chinese Olympic National Team. While leading the Jilin Northeast Tigers in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA), he tripled the team’s win total and guided them to their first playoff appearance in eight seasons.
Before becoming a head coach, Gonzalez built his résumé as an assistant at high-major programs including Providence College, where he helped guide the Friars to the Elite Eight, along with Virginia, Xavier, and Binghamton. He also served on USA Basketball’s gold-medal-winning staff at the World University Games and with the Junior National Team.
Off the court, Gonzalez has been a respected voice in the media, serving as an NCAA and NBA analyst for ESPN Radio and NBC Sports.
